Train for Life does not mean exercise for life. It doesn’t mean pain for life. It also certainly doesn’t mean that you do things that you don’t want to, simply because you think that you should.
Everybody knows that physical activity is important for good health but many people find exercise boring and even unpleasant. The most common course of action is heading off to the gym, and although this is fine for some, for most of us it’s hard to envision a future of constantly turning up on the treadmill.
Don’t get me wrong, gyms and treadmills are fine, if you enjoy them. But seriously, do you? I certainly don’t, and I know I’m not alone. Around 80% of people stop going to the gym after the first month. Who’s to blame us, it’s certainly not the most fun place to be. Before too long we have a list of excuses a mile long for why we can’t go “today”.
One of the most common is that we feel “too tired” even though we actually haven’t “done anything”. This is our brain’s way of helping us avoid things it considers “punishment”. Many of us experienced something very similar when we were young. You know, that mysterious illness that strikes you before school begins followed by the miraculous mid-morning recovery. The only difference is that when we were children it was the thought of having to sit at a desk all day that created the anticipatory dread.
If you are going to stay active for your whole life then, you need to start to rethink the activities you should be doing. You can really begin to enjoy the pleasure of movement if you follow this simple guideline:
Train for Enjoyment!
The simple fact of human nature is this; we don’t continue to do things that we don’t enjoy. Unless we are getting paid of course, but even then, we wish we were doing something else! So what is it that you enjoy? It doesn’t have to make you sweat. You don’t have to have aching muscles after it. It just has to be something that you enjoy doing.
If you can’t think of anything then experiment. Explore. Discover. Try new things. You have a body so that you can move, and believe it or not, moving it is supposed to be fun. It’s supposed to be enjoyable. It’s supposed to make you happy. It’s supposed to make you feel good. But you will receive none of these benefits if you continue to do things that you do not enjoy. That is why this Train for Life guideline:
Train for Enjoyment!
is so so important. Below is a video of myself doing something that I enjoy. It’s called Kettlebell Juggling, and I do it because I like to do it, not because I think I have to. There are many things that you would enjoy if you just gave them a chance.
Move your body, it’s the greatest thing you have, and most of all, enjoy it!
